Assistive Technology Accommodations

Use of assistive technology allows access to information for students with various disabilities.  Below is a list of common assistive technologies which students may need to when taking tests.  As all academic areas on campus may not have the specific technology a student requires, Testing Services is available to assist faculty with proctoring needs.

Computer with Assistive Software

Students who encounter barriers to the activities of writing, reading, or using a computer, may need specialized software and/or hardware in order to remove these barriers. 

Accommodations which may appear on a students letter:

  • Computer with assistive software - Screen-reading software
  • Computer with assistive software - Speech recognition software
  • Computer with assistive software (or reader)
  • Computer with assistive software (or scribe/typist) - no tools*
  • Computer with assistive software (or scribe/typist) - writing - with editing tools**

Computer with Word Processor

Assistive technology does not always mean that specialized software or hardware is required. For students  who encounter barriers to the mechanics of writing, use of a word processor removes the barrier.

Accommodations which may appear on a students letter:

  • Computer with word processor - no editing tools*
  • Computer with word processor - with editing tools**

 

* "No tools" means that the accommodation does not includes use of editing tools (spell check and/or grammar check) built into the software. 
** "With editing tools" means the accommodation includes use of editing tools  (spell check and/or grammar check) built into the software.
